Teenager Surrenders in Watsonville Fatal Shooting

WATSONVILLE — A teenager has been booked into Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder related to a fatal shooting early this month.

Authorities say the 17-year-old boy, accused of killing a man on the morning of Aug. 4 near Arlene Drive and McKenzie Avenue, turned himself in at the police department around 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to a department social media post. Van Michael “Raider” Turner, who died of multiple gunshot wounds, was 23.

Turner is one of Watsonville’s five homicides in 2023 to date and one of seven homicides countywide this year.

Watsonville police investigators have made arrests in four out of five of the city’s homicides. Wednesday’s arrest was the third juvenile to face murder charges related to a homicide in Santa Cruz County this year.
